Rating for Terminator Salvation - 2.5 out of 5 stars.

Ah Terminator…. I had low expectations for this film, and well, I got what I expected. I feel sort of weird having to often defend Christian Bale. I mean everyone’s heard the rant, and although I can’t help but like him less after hearing it, I don’t particularly care for the most part. In all honesty I don’t really watch movies because the actors are good people, and I don’t cheer for athletes based on the amount of money they give to charity. I mean, it certainly helps to be a good person and easy to root for, but I generally like actors and athletes because they are good at what they do at their chosen profession.

Unfortunately for Terminator, Christian Bale does a very poor job portraying John Connor. At no time during the film did I even think of him as John Connor, I kept thinking to myself, “wow Christian Bale sure does enjoy doing that Jack Bauer impression from 24 where he lowers his voice and talks really intensely for dramatic effect). When he delivers the line “I’ll be back”, I can’t help but feel the cheesiness of it all. Most of everything is predictable, recycled, and executed in a way that makes sure the first watch through will be the last. The storyline gets plain silly at the end, but I will give the actor who plays the new terminator kudos for maximizing a role that attempts to salvage the film. I also thought it was stupid how they changed the rating from R to PG13. Its sad to me that a film like this can make over 100 million dollars (still a bust by their expectations), probably about 4x the money that Serenity made in the movie theaters and be half the movie it is. But thats what brand names like Christian Bale and Terminator get you, expectations for which you can be grossly disappointed with when there is no creative spark left in long running ideas.
