So I’ll also be rating albums, movies, games, etc. I’ll be using a five star scale, and I probably won’t review very much music, since I tend not to listen to albums fully anymore. Likely, If I rate an album, it’s probably because I liked it enough to listen to the whole thing.

Eminem - Relapse - 3.5 stars out of 5 stars

Speaking of which, let’s quickly discuss Eminem’s latest album, “Relapse”. As long as I’ve been avid supporter of the idea that no rapper, dead or alive comes close to matching the late 2pac as greatest rapper of all time, I do believe Eminem has come very close. Let’s be honest about rap music, most of rap music is largely bad. Most of it is interchangable, most of it has really no relevance, and most of it begins to all sound the same after awhile. Even Mos Def, whose music I love, sounds like there has been little to no evolution in his music with his last 2 albums. I frankly think most artists and bands don’t really have anything relevant to say after 3 albums anyway, but thats a discussion for another time.

Eminem’s new album is by no means his best album, and realistically you could totally disregard about half to 3/4’s of it and not miss a single thing that you haven’t heard before. But, in some of the best gems on this album, you see Em’s aptitude to write cleverly and honestly. Both of these ideas are paramount when it comes to rap music, without either all you have is a good beat that you could fill in with anything (see the Game’s song Hate it or Love it). Listen to Deju Vu and tell me Em is not the most talented rapper alive. Recovering from an addiction to alcohol and prescription drugs, Em takes you into the world of recovery more honestly and thoroughly than the entire book a Million Little Pieces in 4 minutes. Lyrically, he puts everyone to shame, 2pac included. The problem with Em is that there is typically not enough to fill a whole album and this album is riddled with terrible songs. We Made You, Stay Wide Awake, Same Song and Dance just cannot hold my interest, the noise and lack of inspiration in these songs almost muddle the album’s moments of genius.

Songs to DL: Deju Vu, Beautiful, Insane, Medicine Ball (to a lesser Degree)
